Top 10 Lessons For Runners
There are many hard lessons we need to learn as runners in order to truly embrace and LOVE the process of being a runner. Most runners have been through a period of being very results-focused and putting their worth in their race times.
Top 10 Tips
10.) More volume = NOT always better. Just running more miles can often leave you feeling tired. Miles with a purpose are more important.
9.) If you don't program in rest days, your body will eventually force rest from you in the form of illness, injury or burn out. REST DAYS ARE TRAINING DAYS TOO!
8.) Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! A car can't go far on an empty tank of gas. Don't expect your body to do the same.
7.) The mind is your greatest enemy and your friend. Positive self talk is a skill that must be learned to succeed.
6.) You can do everything right and still have a bad race. Bad races are inevitable. Just don't let them become the norm.
5.) You can barely train and still have a decent race. It's not the norm....but sometimes your body just needed rest.
4.) You have more potential than you think and you'll find that potential by truly embracing the process. Success is not an accident.
3.) Don't go out too fast in your races! Starting too fast is the most common mistake in marathon running. It is particularly common at the Boston Marathon, where the first mile drops 85 feet. Don’t “fall” for the trap! The Bonk is real!
2.) Don't try anything new on race day! You can't control the conditions but you can train for them. Don't avoid training in the rain, cold, or heat (reasonably). You might face those conditions on race day.
1.) No one cares as much about your running as you do. Yeah your friends may hit like on social media, but to be honest, they wonder if you are a narcissist. In fact, most think you are crazy for all the running you do. The sport of running may have many participants, but it has very few fans. You care and that's all that matters.
